Tega Cay,
South Carolina was founded in 1970. The ground breaking took place on 1,600 acres adjacent to
Lake
Wylie. This land was previously owned by Duke Power Company. Tega Cay means “
Beautiful
Peninsula.” The Ervin Company first built roads, a clubhouse, pools, tennis courts, and a golf course. Then housing construction with a Polynesian theme was incorporated throughout the city including home design and street names. The developer filed for bankruptcy in 1982. At this point the homeowners came together to create the city. Tega Cay’s motto then became “The Good Life.” A police department was established shortly after that in 1983.
