Matthews
Matthews was 1st known as Stumptown probably because of the remains of the forestry that took place before it was settled. In 1874 a railroad was built through the town and it was changed to Matthews in honor of Mr. Matthews a director of the railroad. The town was incorporated in 1872. The town of

Mecklenburg County about 10 miles SE of downtown. Matthews covers 17.18 square miles. A quant downtown, attractive neighborhoods, a variety of churches, quality of schools and outstanding hospital and medical facilities make for a full service community. The population is about 38K. Matthews alive festival is a Labor Day weekend celebration dedicated to the support of local non-profit organizations through music, arts and community involvement.
